Field Trip

    Wanagama stands from wana (forest) and gama (universitas gadjah mada) is an educational forest established by the spirit of struggling from limiting resources to reforest marginal and critical areas in Gunung Kidul Regency. The Gunung Kidul Regency was a dry area and was known as the driest region in Java. During dry season this area had been lacking water, leading to famine. The success of reforestation was a complex combination of the application of modern silvicultural techniques develop by Faculty of Forestry, Universitas Gadjah Mada and social engagement with local people. The silvicultural techniques were able to establish forest from nothing, utilizing existing resources. While social engagement in Wanagama provides access to forest land for local people and balancing the need to establish forest such as fertilizer through the application of agroforestry system. The reforestation success also inspires local community to adapt the silvicultural system and has been applied throughout the Gunung Kidul landscape. Yet, it has been adapted to many different regions in Java island. Not only forest was established, the nontimber forest and ecosystem services also improved, for example, water is available throughout years.
